Bryn Terfel, a Welshman, was the local favorite for obvious reasons. ![]() ![]() Then, in the same year the Berlin Wall fell, came two exceptional young baritones between whom the audience and the judges were torn. And the competition had failed to produce certifiable stars, except for Finnish soprano Karita Mattila, who won in 1983. But 1989 was only the fourth time it had been held. Fifteen years ago, long before Ruben and Clay, and Kelly and Justin, there transpired at a relatively unknown singing competition in Wales something now known as "the battle of the baritones." The Cardiff "Singer of the World" Competition, held every two years, was supposed to add luster to the reputation of the grimy, coal-shipping port and capital of Wales. ![]()
